A call to action button is one of the most important things you can have on your websites, especially if you need your user to perform a certain action. You can see call to action buttons everywhere – from online stores to the websites that try to convince people to sign against ACTA. But what makes a good call to action button and how can I design me one?

According to the wikipedia definition, a “call to action” is

a banner, button, or some type of graphic or text on a website meant to prompt a user to click it and continue down a conversion funnel

In plain English, the declared objective of a call to action area is to determine the user to perform some kind of an action – weather that action is to buy something, to invest some time in reading more information about a subject or to be willing to give his email address. If you have the slightest interest in things like “conversion rates” and the “conversion funnel” than odds are you need some form of call to action – weather this is a whole area (like a contact form) or just a little juicy button. In this post I will share with you my basic line of thought when I’m designing one of these call to action buttons.
